Frohe Ostern! (Happy Easter!) In Austria, Easter is full of rich symbolism, customs and traditions. There are many rituals associated with Easter, for example painting easter eggs, the easter bonfire or the "Osterjause" (the Festive Easter Meal). Children are delighted to find hidden Easter nests full of chocolate and other little treats in their gardens that are hid by the Easter Bunny (Osterhase) on Easter Sunday. Another beautiful tradition are the Easter markets, which take place annually in the weeks leading up to Easter Sunday in March and April. These markets are a celebration of spring where you can find a range of seasonal goods, hand-painted eggs, traditional food and family-friendly activities. Vienna’s Easter markets are held in several locations across the city - here are all markets you definitely have to visit:
Easter Market Schönbrunn
Viennese Easter Market at Schönbrunn
One of the most beautiful Easter markets takes place in front of Schönbrunn Palace. It is one of the largest in the city, attracting many visitors each year. It features over 70 stalls selling a range of Easter-themed goods, including hand painted eggs, handmade arts and crafts and traditional Austrian delicacies. The guests are spoilt with sweet classics such as Easter pastries and traditional Kaiserschmarrn and savoury delicacies like Easter ham gröstl and beef goulash. There are also vegetarian and vegan dishes and a wide variety of bowls and spritzers.
The highlights of Schönbrunn Palace Easter Market include a courtyard carousel, running all day long, live music concerts at 11 am and interactive games from 1 to 5 pm. Every weekend and on Easter Monday, the cheerful sounds of jazz and swing live concerts accompany the lively hustle and bustle of the market.

Old Viennese Easter Market Freyung
Old Viennese Easter Market at Freyung
Another popular market is the Freyung Easter Market, located in the city center. The organizers launched the first "Old Viennese Easter Market" on the Freyung in 1990. This springtime counterpart to the "Old Viennese Christmas market" continues the market tradition on this beautiful historic market square.
This market features a variety of artisanal products, including handmade jewelry, pottery, and clothing. In the middle of the Old Viennese Easter Market you will find "Europe's largest egg mountain" which consists of hundreds of hand-painted colorful easter eggs (that cost between 4€ - 15€) and has become legendary in Vienna. The lovingly painted rotating "giant egg" is a popular meeting point for taking photos and lingering. You can also sample traditional Easter treats such as Kaiserschmarrn, roast lamb and much more.
